In keeping with the 2024 Abitur syllabus, this 120-minute CPD course uses Sarfraz Manzoor's autobiographical account of growing up in Luton as a starting point to explore topics such as coming of age and youth culture, identity and belonging as well as Britishness and multicultural Britain. Against the backdrop of postcolonial theory, it provides a thorough analysis of the text in order to facilitate task and test design and, not least, classroom discourse. Moreover, the course identifies recurring narrative strands within Manzoor's account and provides a systematic approach across the eight chapters. In addition, it presents and critically analyses learning materials to help adapt them for classroom use.

By the end of the seminar participants
- will be familiar with content, themes and style of Sarfraz Manzoor's memoir.
- will be able to connect key passages of the text with postcolonial theory.
- will have explored and evaluated strategies to analyse the text and provide motivating tasks in a classroom setting.
- will be aware of fitting test formats to assess students' receptive and productive skills.
